MONDAY EVENINGS: Beginners Plus / Intermediate Photography Practical
Level: Intermediate / Beginners Plus

Mondays, 7-8.30pm (4 evenings), £195
23 Feb (then 2, 9, 16 Mar)
20 April (then 27 Apr, 11, 18 May – no class on 4 May as Bank Holiday)

Location: Week 1 at our Piccadilly location; Weeks 2, 3, 4 central London locations near to easily accessible tubes and to be decided together in the group in Week 1, based on common interests.

Building on the basics learned in Beginners Photography, whether with us at The Mango Lab or elsewhere, the Intermediate Photography Practical expands that knowledge and applies it to more challenging situations.

In this course designed to stretch and test the photographer’s knowledge you will be guided in how to make educated decisions in difficult lighting situations, one of the most commonly asked questions at the beginning of this course. With expert guidance to hand you will be trained to analyse your composition and learn to refine image light balance through your in-camera light meter. By adding flash correctly to your photography you will experience the exciting visual opportunities of mixing ambient light with camera flash on our roof-top over the night-scape of central London!

The course will provide a mix between in-class preparations, picture analysis and on-location briefs in central London. This course is designed for students with a DSLR with pop-up flash and a basic knowledge of manual exposure.

Maximum course size: 6.

For our Saturday Practicals see our Weekend page.

TUESDAY EVENINGS: Photoshop: Photography and Post-production

Tuesdays, 7-9pm (4 evenings), £195

24 Feb (then 3, 10, 17 Mar) ***new dates

Location: Central London studio, Piccadilly/Soho.

Discover how good you are and how good you can be! We love seeing delighted and amazed faces when we show you how you can make so much more of your photography!  It is a common observation amongst new photographers (and some not so new) that the photographs they take lack quality. Newcomers to photography often believe not yet "perfect" photographs can be improved through more practice or even a more expensive camera. This may be true. However, a vast improvement can be achieved through Photoshop! And we always advise: be wary of the on-camera delete button!  Post-production adjustments are what "save" and enhance your photography. Selective cropping, colour adjustments, contrast and saturation control are some of the tools available in Photoshop and editing programmes on your desktop or laptop computer (and even in smartphone apps) that can turn your photographs into professional works of art!
In this course students work with their own images using Adobe Photoshop software. (Please bring some images on a usb stick, hard drive, card, etc.) You will be introduced to the capabilities and availability of techniques which enhance your photography. These are conventional processes that happen after the photos are taken or in what is known as "post-production". Students will also be introduced to building products such as collages, greeting cards, posters and preparing images for email and the web.

Computers provided or bring your own laptop if you prefer. Bring your own images and discover how good you can be!

Maximum course size: 4.

WEDNESDAY EVENINGS: Beginner Digital Photography
Level: Beginner

Wednesdays, 7-8.30pm (4 evenings), £155
25 Feb (then 4, 11, 18 Mar)
22 Apr (then 29 Apr, 6, 13 May)

Location: Week 1 at our Piccadilly location; Weeks 2, 3, 4 central London locations near to easily accessible tubes and to be decided together in the group in Week 1, based on common interests.

Taking pictures but struggling to understand why you’re not getting what you want? Your owner’s manual reads like a foreign textbook?

Learn photographic terminology which will give meaning to terms such as
- shutter speed
- aperture
- white balance
- depth of field
- focal length
- jpeg and raw files, resolution
- and more...

With definitions understood, the course moves around each of these technical terms and employs practical exercises to explore the successful use of them. At the end of 4 weeks (or 4 sessions) you will know where to find and how to use your camera’s settings for creative effect. And you will have a collection of your own short photography projects to prove it!

Maximum course size: 6.

For our Saturday Beginners Photography courses please see our Weekend courses page.

THURSDAY EVENINGS: iMovie Film Editing
Level: Beginners -Beginners Plus

Thursdays, 7-9pm (4 evenings), £195
26 Feb (then 5, 12, 19 Mar) ***new dates.
23 Apr (then 30 Apr, 7, 14 May)

Location: at our Piccadilly location.

Everyone has shot video these days, even if it's just on your phone.
Turn your collections of film clips from mobile phones to DSLR cameras into a short, that friends will actually want to watch!

Now is the time to get creative and learn to create slick and fun transitions between clips, add effects and lots more.

Join us to turn your film footage into something you can actually share, whether online on YouTube, Vimeo or on your own website. You will see how your movie begins to shape as you give it form through the editing process and build your clips into a tangible storyline. By adding titles, sound or music you will learn to add the finishing touches.

With clear step-by-step guidance in a fun and friendly environment, the process from raw footage to completed film (as much as time allows and depending on how ambitious you are!) will have you up and running for producing some exciting new projects.

We also look at the Mac set up and organisation and navigation around files within the Finder environment, setting up of Libaries on external harddrives to save you space and keep your work safe, as well as invaluable shortcuts to add speed to your process.

Course requirements:
To ensure that your course is as educational and runs as efficiently as possible, we request if you are bringing your own laptop that you have footage either on an external harddrive, USB stick, etc. to import in the first session (e.g. .mov, .mp4, files, etc.).
Due to the varying transfer speeds of different cameras and cables (USB, Firewire 400, Firewire 800, thunderbolt, etc.) this can be extremely time consuming and we strongly recommend you do this before the course. Please contact us if you need guidance before attending.
Be as selective with your footage as possible. You will only need to select about 10 minutes of footage for use in this course.

Software version: iMovie 08, iMovie 11, iMovie 10.0 Please let us know what version of iMovie you are on and what Mac Operating System you have.

For custom-built training at dates and times to suit you, whether for groups or individual training, at work or for private use, please contact us (020 3002 4991).
