February Brief - Lowlight Photography

Open to Teens (guided by Julia) and Adults (guided by Karl) this Saturday Club explores in the heart of London the photographic magic you can find emerging in lowlight and also with long exposures at slow or excepetionally slow shutter speeds. There are additional sleight of hand techniques that will be introduced and experimentation with your cameras will be encouraged in answering the brief presented on the day (still just day, but merging into twilight, an exciting time for photographers...).

Please contact us to book, find out where exactly we will meet and also let us know whether you need to borrow a tripod. Bring your own if you have one!

Please dress for the weather and have cameras, cards and batteries prepped.

Shoot: Saturday 28 February, 4.30pm. South Bank, London.
Fee: £85.00

Level: Open to all.

To book: email us at info@themangolab.co.uk or call us on 0203 002 4991 to book your place.
We look forward to seeing you!

What is The Saturday Club?

The Saturday Club is a day-long photographic brief delivered as a bi-monthly to quarterly weekend workshop event, with membership open to photographers of all skill levels. It was created to answer a few points in adult learning which include but are not limited to the following:

Enthusiastic but time poor. Learners and photo enthusiasts who would like to attend courses in photography to improve or practise skills but have limited time.

Structure and feedback. These days “everyone is a photographer” may be true to an extent, but having a focus or structure built to include feedback that extends beyond an emoticon is what we offer. The Saturday Club involves original and creative briefs to make sure your takeaways are a good investment.

Investing in your results. Our sessions don’t just end with drinks at a pub and looking at images on the back of your camera screen. Our briefs include some manner of seeing the group’s results later. We have hosted exhibitions with gallery parties, produced books and online magazines, posted online galleries and sourced out hi-spec framing and printing so that each participant receives something from their day out. Each Saturday Club involves something new in terms of a takeaway and is dependant on the number of folks who enrol.

Changing locations and briefs. We have had Saturday Clubs focused around street photography with an iPhone to shooting models with instant film. We have shot in Paris, Brighton, London and Leeds and are always looking for new destinations to inspire you. Our briefs are not only exercises in photography, but about creating experiences that are brought to you through photography.

Socialising in person. Online groups and photosharing is pretty cool. We like it too. But there are times when avatar just won’t do and you want to meet some new people and share IN PERSON. A big takeaway from our meetups is forming new friendships and meeting new people.

We operate The Saturday Club on a pay-as-you-go scheme or part of The Mango Lab bundle programme. Briefs are set across a wide range from classical themes (such as black and white) to current themes in the contemporary photographic landscape.

Who is it for?

Saturday Club participants are photography enthusiasts looking for a challenging event but not a longer course. They want to have the structure of a creative brief but not be held to a course structure. It provides the opportunity to spend time with like-minded photographic enthusiasts, photograph to a brief and compare notes and pictures. Participants include the novice to the serious/experienced amateur as the month-by-month briefs cater to all experience levels.

How much does it cost and what do I get for it?

All this for only £85. We usually have two or more Mango Lab tutors attending the events to present and offer opinion or technical advice. Privately run we operate without government funding through grants or programs. This fee cost supports the research and development of each workshop, staff fees to develop, organise and run the event, and any post production follow-up necessary. The fee also goes towards the presentation/ exhibition showing a selection of images that are curated from the shoot day and exhibited in whichever format is chosen for the month.

A successful and popular creative platform to The Mango Lab’s portfolio of photographic events and workshops. Come and join us, and have your photography seen by friends, a new audience and the worldwideweb!

Saturday, 17 January 2015, Amersham, The Chilterns

Our January Saturday Club gets us out of the house to shake off the winter blues as we hike through the Chilterns in and around the lovely town of Old Amersham, Bucks. (at the end of the Metropolitan Line). We’ll have the day to aim our cameras at a photogenic mix of lakes, brooks, forests, farmlands and the historic area known as Old Amersham, photographing to the creative brief delivered on the day. We’ll end with some low-light photography in the town before heading into one of the century old pubs for drinks around a log fire.

Shoot: 18 May 2013, at the Horniman Museum
Show: 8 June 2013, at The Mango Lab studios

In line with our “Artist in Residence” Karl’s project #thehashtagofman we will be running The Saturday Club with our usual inspirational gallery visit followed by discussion of impulses and potential photographic outcomes (over coffee, cake or lunch…). Participants have approximately 2 weeks in which to make their own interpretation of the theme and collate a series of images to submit to the #thehashtagofman. From this submission we will curate a “Hashtag of Man - Work In Progress” exhibition at the Mango Lab studios, hosted as always with our cheese and wine evening.
