Teens Photography courses run at Central London locations (starting at our Piccadilly meeting room where we begin by looking at camera settings, where to find them and how to use them. From here we head out to the surrounding area to put new skills into practice, and then based on the group's interests we decide together where to meet (always near to easily accessible tube stations, e.g. Green Park for wildlife in the park and Buckingham Palace, Camden Town for the market, Embankment and South Bank to head to Greenwich by boat on the Thames, and lots more) unless otherwise stated.

Have some fun out and about around London with a camera and learn a new skill. Or advance your skills in our Intermediate courses!

Spend some fun-time with us at The Mango Lab - become a budding photographer in just 4 days!
Impress yourself as well as your friends and family. You'll wonder why you ever used automatic mode!
We teach enough skills in our beginners courses for you to go out and experiment on your own, whether it's learning to see the world around you with new eyes, or in our longer courses that and knowing a load of new camera tricks. Of course we hope you'll come back for more! In fact, we see Teens returning to us and even choosing to miss out on holidays abroad so that they can join us to continue learning and have fun!

For a fun time, learning (or maybe polishing) your photography techniques, building a bank of cool images (Instgram, Snapchat and Facebook will be delighted!) as well as meeting some other camera-happy Teens (usually 12-16 year olds but we are pretty flexible), you get to explore London for photography practicals with expert guidance at hand.
Max. group size 6 people, to ensure effective and fun learning.
Give us a ring or email us. We'd love to meet you!

During a teens course you can:

  • Learn how to use your camera (or our movie cameras) and its settings and move away from automatic!

  • Master pinpoint sharp focusing (sometimes but not always automatic - learn when to use which!).

WEEKEND COURSES - term-time

************************************************************

WEEKEND TERM-TIME Teens Digital Photography BEGINNERS on Location in central London
Level: Beginner

Saturdays: 28 Feb 2015 (then 7, 14, 21 Mar) (4 mornings), 10am-1pm, £285.

Location: Week 1 at our Piccadilly location; Weeks 2, 3, 4 central London locations near to easily accessible tubes and to be decided together in the group in Week 1, based on common interests.

Digital cameras are as common as mobile phones and to produce good photographic results you need to know how to use them. From photographing friends to creating eye-catchy compositions this course will provide you with the basic skills to make your photography begin to stand out from the rest. You can use these courses as a Skill for the Duke of Edinburgh’s Award scheme. Just let us know when you book, as you will need enough sessions to make the DoE requirement.

This course provides a fun approach to learning the basic settings on cameras, either digital SLR or compact cameras (participants will ideally need to provide their own cameras - please phone us if you have any questions). Teens will learn how to use different settings for creative effect, how to set a correct exposure in different modes and for various situations, and we will begin exploring how to create strong images as well as unusual pictures with these techniques. We will use a visual treasure hunt to explore what makes a strong picture (composition) and we discover how different perspectives, angles and camera techniques make photography exciting! We will also look at editing images on the computer, with both the professional and fun approach. By the end of the four sessions Teens should feel they know the beginnings of a new craft.

Course requirement: Camera - ideally a DSLR or compact with Tv/S and Av/A and M programme modes. We do have cameras you can borrow so please contact us if you would like to borrow a camera for this course.
This course can be used as a Skill for the Duke of Edinburgh’s Award scheme.

Teens WILDLIFE PHOTOGRAPHY
Locations for the week will be wildlife and nature-based in and around London, and the course will concentrate on a variety of skills, in which you can borrow our zoom lenses for close-up shots and macro photography. Ever seen how hairy a bumble bee is?! Or the insect "landing strip" on a flower? Discover nature and practise your photography at the same time!
A teen's quote: "This course is so much more than just photography!"

Please contact us if you would like to borrow a camera for any of our courses.

Weekday mornings, Easter Holidays
Mon 30 Mar - Thurs 2 Apr (4 mornings), 10am-1pm, £285.

Teens PHOTOSHOP: IMAGE & PHOTO-EDITING
Before moving to Photoshop we will take a step back and look at the skill of composition, and see what our eyes are drawn to, to be inspired in the first place to take the picture, how to capture a strong visual image and leave out what is regarded as redundant material – or crop it out! This course brings images to the digital 'lightroom' for processing – fascination abounds as Teens view their images springing to life where they may have thought they were better trashed!
Techniques for bringing out the best visual highlights within an image, adding new colours, overlapping images to create collages, adding text and even creating mini movie animations will inspire Teens to keep busy photographing, show them how to manage their images on the computer AND use their images for any number of fun flashy projects, at school, at home or online with friends.

Please contact us if you need to borrow a camera for Day One to create images for this course. Or bring some mobile phone images for editing.

Saturday & Sunday, Easter holiday course
Sat 28 - Sun 29 Mar (4 mornings), 10am-1pm, £285.
Sat 11 - Sun 12 Apr

Teens ILLUSION PHOTOGRAPHY: create the unexpected and unexplained
Level: Beginners Plus and Intermediate

2015 dates to be confirmed. 2-5pm (4 afternoons), £285.

This course will challenge Teens not only to use the settings on the camera but, with our guidance, to be creative at setting up unusual shots to create masterful illusions.
We've all taken the shots in which an airplane appears to be within your grasp, but have you ever photographed a friend who is leviating in the middle of the air? How could you use mirrors and reflections to trick the eye, and have you ever thought of building or bringing things into the landscape to create illusions? Well, we have a host of ideas up our sleeves and will encourage you with our guidance to come up with some of your own. You'll be amazed you hadn't thought of being so creative before!

Next courses in this subject 2015.

Teens INSTAGRAM: Beyond the Selfie - Creating Photographic Stories in Instagram
Level: Beginners, Beginners Plus and Intermediate

Fri 20 Feb, (1 day workshop) 11am-5pm, £155.

Location: We will start at our Piccadilly location, review the use of phone cameras including accurate focus points, adjusting exposure, and introduce a few editing, font, and layout apps, before we head out to the nearby area to put new skills into practice and for visual experiments galore!

This one day workshop includes a set of creative projects which uses the smartphone and photosocial networking app Instagram as a platform for expression, exhibition and response. This is not a workshop which has you randomly shooting your way through the day but one which asks you to consider the narrative behind the imagery. Combining a couple of smartphone specific apps, focused briefs and various locations you will learn how to build images into a powerful personal collections. Briefs will push you to create images that work in presentation forms which you will learn such as typologies, diptychs and triptychs while defining your 'raison d'etre' for the images you have made.

Easter Holidays: Teens Digital Photography Specialist course – WHAT TYPE OF PHOTOGRAPHER COULD I BE?
Level: Beginners Plus and Intermediate

Tuesday - Friday: 7 - 10 April (4 mornings), 10am-1pm, £285. (starts Tuesday, not Monday, due to Bank Holiday)
Monday - Thursday: 13 - 16 April (4 mornings), 10am-1pm, £285.

This course will draw from a range of the skills we have covered over the summer in our Teens Specialist Photography courses, and enable you to get a feel for what areas of photography interest you most.
We start with those "complex" aperture numbers and build on the use of macro lenses, as a Wildlife Photographer uses for the bees, moss and plant life, and more. We then add the use of reflectors and light, using on-camera and external flash units so you get to try these out for yourself and test out portraiture (and modelling). And then, stretching the boundaries of what you can use photography for – we have opened Teens’ eyes this summer to such a range! – we look at some science alongside some weird and wacky uses, drawing from time lapse as taught in our Secret London course – the Science, Innovator & Design Photographer, inspired by our visits to the Science Museum’s Mysteries of the Unseen World 3D at their iMax cinema (catch it in September while it is still on: highly recommended!). And alternative photographic processes in our Darkroom course pave the way for the artisan and design photographer too.
We’re inspired by your excitement at the range we are introducing you to and hope to see some new faces for this wide-ranging photography course or one of our others for an exciting half-term!

This course can be used as a Skill for the Duke of Edinburgh’s Award scheme.

Course requirement: Camera – ideally a DSLR or compact with Tv/S and AV/A and M programme modes. We have cameras you can borrow so please contact us in you would like to borrow a camera for this course and to book a space.

Please contact us you would like to borrow a camera for this course. Macro lenses, zoom lenses and external flash can be provided, but bring your own if you have. Call and talk to us if you want more information or to book (020 3002 4991).

Easter holidays: Teens Digital Photography Wildlife workshop (Weekdays)
Level: Beginners Plus and Intermediate

Monday - Thursday: 30 Mar - 2 Apr (4 mornings), 10am-1pm, £285.

Join us on this unique urban photographic safari exclusive to Teens. Without abandoning the comforts of access to a tube or lose a wifi signal this four day workshop challenges students to freeze waterfowl mid-flight, compose a majestic deer in landscape, scratch your head over the contrast control of penguins and get that perfect expression of a cow with its calf. Locations for the week will be wildlife and nature-based in and around London, and the course will concentrate on a variety of skills, in which you can borrow our zoom lenses for close-up shots and macro photography. Ever seen how hairy a bumble bee is?! Or the insect "landing strip" or "runway" on a flower? Discover nature and practise your photography at the same time!
A teen's quote: "This course is so much more than just photography!"

The urban photographer Teen will have some basic knowledge of their cameras and settings but would like a review before moving on to more advanced photographic techniques. We will move quickly on to the skill of composition, observing what our eyes are drawn to and capturing that as a strong visual image. This course brings images into the digital lightroom for post-processing, springing to life images and turning 'meh' images into trophy shots. Techniques for bringing out the best visual highlights, adding new colours, overlapping images, adding text and even creating mini movie animations will inspire Teens to keep busy photographing, show them how to manage their images on the computer and use their images for a number of fun, flashy projects.

Course requirement: Camera - ideally a DSLR or compact with Tv/S and Av/A and M programme modes.
